52 viikkoa kuvahaasteita, viikko 3: taiteellinen vaikutelma, punainen / 52 week photography challenge, week 3: artistic impression, red

Kolmannen viikon aihe oli taiteellinen vaikutelma ja punainen väri, jonka tulisi olla kuvan kohteena. Taiteelliset vaikutelmat ovat hankalia, sillä niiden toteuttamiseen tarvitaan inspiraatiota ja sen ilmestyminen ei ole itsestäänselvyys. Vaikeusastetta korottaa myös se, ettei minulla enää ole muusaa, joka saisi luovuuteni kukkimaan. Luin kuitenkin listasta seuraavan taideaiheen kohdalta vinkin makrokuvauksesta, joten päätin lähestyä haastetta tätä kautta. Säädettävä Alien-sormus kesti hanskassani kaksi viikkoa, mikä jälkeen ksenomorfin häntä murtui. Sormus jatkaa elämäänsä toistaiseksi erikoislähikuvien lisämausteena.

The third challenge was artistic impression with emphasis on the color red. Artistic impression can be difficult since it needs some inspiration and that is not always readily available. This is made extra difficult by the fact that I lost my muse who had a stong effect on my artistic creativity. However I read the list a bit further and found a tip for the next artistic impression challenge: macro photography. Yes! There was an idea I could work on. My adjustable Alien ring broke its tail after two weeks of being worn inside a glove but I could extend its life by employing it to spice up some extreme close-ups.

Ajattelin tuoda punaista esiin enemmän lisäämällä kuvaan pienen pisteen sinistä. Kuvakulma on selkeämpi ja sivuvalaistus on komeampi. Pitkä valotusaika saa kuvan keskeisen elementin hohtamaan.

I added a spot of blue to accentuate the red. The angle is clearer and the long exposure time brings out the reactor's Cherenkov radiation.

Lyhyt valotusaika jättää kuvaan vain salaman valoa ja kullanvärinen heijastus erottuu hieman. Räikeä valaistus tuo mieleen hieman toisen Alien-elokuvan. Tämä kuva on yhdistelmä kahdesta hieman eri kohtaan tarkennetusta otoksesta.

Shorter exposure time leaves only the flash and the gold reflector is just visible. The lighting reminds me of the second Alien. This is a focus stacked image made of two differently focused photos.

Olin jotakuinkin tyytyväinen ensimmäiseen ideaani, mutta löysin keittiöstä muitakin punaisia esineitä, joten otin vielä lisää kuvia.

I was somewhat satisfied with the first idea but I found some other red objects in the kitchen and decided to continue.

Punainen väri aiheuttaa minulle ongelmia, sillä Lightroomissa se näyttää juuri siltä, miltä haluan sen näyttävän, mutta kun viimeistelyn tekee Photoshopissa ja tallentaa kuvat .jpg:ksi, punaisen sävy muuttuu, kun 16-bittinen tiedosto muuttuu 8-bittiseksi.

Red causes me some headache, since I can get it to look just fine in Lightroom but when I finish the photos in 'shop and convert the 16 bit files into 8 bit .jpg, the red looks different. Maybe I should simplify my workflow and use ProPhoto only when I know a photo is going to be printed.

Ensi viikon haasteena on muotokuva. Näin projektin alkuvaiheessa aloitan todennäköisesti yksinkertaisesti luonnonvalolla, studiokuvien aika on myöhemmin.
