Viikon haasteena oli taiteellinen vaikutelma, aiheena karamelli. Vinkkinä mainittiin makrokuvaus. Hienoa, tämä aihe on tuttu - voisin syödä jatkuvasti karkkia. Nyt tosin hieman rauhallisempaan tahtiin, sillä on ensimmäisen vuosittaisen perunalastulakon aika, joten en voi heittelehtiä täysin holtittomasti makean ja suolaisen kyllästymispisteen välillä.

The sixth challenge was artistic impression and the subject candy. Macro photography was mentioned. This is a familiar subject - I could eat candy for hours. Although right now I've had to scale back a bit because it is the season for the first potato chip pause of the year, so I can't swing wildly between sweet and salty saturation points.

Eräs tyyppi sanoi minulle haastattelussa, että mainostoimistoissa "keskitytään enemmän yhteen tosi hyvään kuvaan". Edessä oli jälleen mahdollisuus harjoitella valaisua ja lisäksi kokeilla jonkinlaisen mainoskuvan rakentamista. Päävaloksi orjuutin Elinchromen D-Lite RX One -studiosalaman ja taustaa elävöittämään käytin Canonin salamaa, jonka laukaisin radiolähettimellä ja jonka välähdys puolestaan laukaisi päävalon. A guy once told me in an interview that advertising agencies concentrate more on one really excellent photo instead on several good ones. So, here was another chance to practise lighting as well as create some kind of a product image. I enslaved an Elinchrome D-Lite RX One studio strobe for main light and used the Canon speedlite to light the background. The speedlite was triggered remotely and the flash in turn triggered the D-Lite. I placed some tin foil in the background.

Valojen tehojen tasapainottaminen oli hankalaa. Päävalo oli heti oletusteholla 2 hyvä, mutta taustavalo aiheutti ongelmia, sillä se oli pienimmälläkin 1/64 teholla liian kirkas. Päädyin korottamaan päävaloa 2,5:een, jolloin tilanne alkoi tasoittua. Seuraava pulma oli taustan sumeuden miellyttävyyden säätäminen kohdalleen. Olisin mielelläni tehnyt bokehista pistemäisemmän, mutta se olisi vaatinut objektiivin himmentämistä f/16:een tai vielä pienemmäksi, mikä olisi puolestaan vaatinut valaistuksen säätämistä tehokkaammaksi. Toinen vaihtoehto olisi ollut kohteen ja taustan etäisyyden hienosäätäminen, mutta se olisi ollut liian työlästä. Huomasin myös, että kun nostin D-Liten tehon 2:sta 2,5:een, Lorelain salamasynkronointinopeus putosi luvatusta 1/200 sekunnista jonnekin 1/160 s tienoille. Tämä saattaa johtua monimutkaisesta kaukolaukaisujärjestelystä.

Balancing the lights was difficult. The main light looked good at 2, which was probably the default setting. The background light was causing problems since it was too bright even at the lowest 1/64 setting. I ended up boosting the main light to 2,5, which helped the balance. The next puzzle was adjusting the background blur to a pleasant level. I would have preferred more solid or pointy bokeh balls, but I would have needed to stop the aperture down to f/16 or even smaller, which would have meant boosting the lighting more. I could also have moved the background foil closer to the subject, but it would have been very laborious. I also noticed that when I raised the D-Lite's power from 2 to 2,5, Lorelai's flash sync speed dropped from the factory-specified 1/200 s to somewhere around 1/160 s. This might have been caused by the complicated radio-slave flash triggering.

20 mm sormus on hyvä karamellipidike. Lisäsin toiseen kuvaan somisteeksi Amerikan pastilleja.

The Alien ring was a good candy holder. I sweetened the second version with extra candy.

Hukkasin Alien-sormuksen palatessani pikkujouluista, mutta vanha sormus toimi lähes yhtä hyvin. F/13 tuo taustan valopisteisä aavistuksen paremmin esille, mutta jatkossa kokeilen pienempää aukkoa ja etäisyyttä taustafolioon.

I lost the Alien head ring during my walk through the city after a crhistmas party, but my old ring worked almost as well. F/13 brings slightly more definition to the bokeh balls but in future setups I will test smaller apertures and background distances.
